GMMG / 4-H Plant Sale 2020

The middle of winter is a great time to get excited for spring and preparing our gardens! The Lumpkin County 4-H and Georgia Mountains Master Gardeners are ready to provide beautiful, quality plants once again offered through their annual plant sale. They are now taking orders for a large selection of perennials, shrubs, fruit, groundcovers and fern varieties. This is your opportunity to fulfill your gardening goals by ordering superior plants, among them many unusual items.

Butterfly Bush MissMolly Thirty-three different plants are available to pre-order until Friday, March 13 with delivery in mid-April. All plants have been professionally grown in specialized nurseries in north Georgia, and only leave their greenhouses the day before they are delivered to customers. The selection includes native plants, old favorites, new discoveries, and fruit suited to our climate. In addition to blueberries and thornless blackberries, there are also raspberries, goji berries, a full size hardy pomegranate and an extremely hardy large fig variety available. This year's plant varieties include many that attract pollinators such as native hybrid anise hyssop, hardy lantana, and native hybrid swamp sunflower. You will also find many deer resistant/tolerant varieties. There is a new large native fern on the list, and two hard to find evergreen groundcovers. "Proven Winner" plants this year include the striking raspberry colored Buddleia "Miss Molly", and a new ever-blooming peach colored Rose "At LastĀ®".

Order forms are also available at the Extension Office, located at 26 Johnson Street, Suite A in Dahlonega. The deadline for orders is Friday, March 13, 2020,
The ONE DAY ONLY plant pick-up is on Saturday, April 18, from 9:00am to 3:00pm at the Lumpkin County Roads/Recycling Department, 1646 Red Oak Flats Road in Dahlonega. Master Gardeners will be in attendance at the pickup site to help with any questions you may have about soil preparation and basic care for the plants you have ordered.

In addition, literally hundreds of additional blooming plants will be available for purchase on the pickup day (which are not on the order form). Think of all the best blooming plants in mid-April - azaleas galore, and loads of other spring favorites!

Also available is the "Gardener's Journal", created by the Georgia Mountains Master Gardeners to be used as a handy and fun way to keep a record of your garden plants and maintenance projects. It is not year dated so it can be used in successive years to improve your garden record keeping. The cost for these beautifully illustrated journals is $15.00 or two for $25.00, and they make great gifts.

And this year we will have "bee hotels", constructed of wood and bamboo and handmade by Lumpkin County 4-H students in collaboration with the University of North Georgia Appalachian Studies "Hometown Harvest Hoop House". These are a great way to attract pollinators to your flower or vegetable garden. They are places for solitary bees to make their nests, and also provide shelter for them over the winter.

Proceeds from last year's sales were used by the 4-H to enhance programs for their members and to pay for scholarships to attend camps and enrichment activities. The Master Gardeners continue to establish and maintain gardening projects throughout the Lumpkin and Dawson County areas, help fund the Junior Master Gardener's projects with their after school club, provide college scholarships, and they continue to host educational gardening presentations throughout the year.

Deadline for orders is Friday, March 13, 2020
Pickup Date is Saturday April 18, 2020.
