GMMG / 4-H Plant Sale 2019

The middle of winter is a great time to get excited for spring and preparing our gardens! The Lumpkin County 4-H and the Georgia Mountains Master Gardeners are ready to provide beautiful, quality plants once again offered through their annual plant sale. They are now taking orders for a large selection of perennials, shrubs, fruit, groundcovers and fern varieties. This is your opportunity to fulfill your gardening goals by ordering superior plants, among them many unusual items.

Thirty-four different plants are available to pre-order until Friday, March 15, 2019 with delivery in mid-April. All plants have been professionally grown in specialized nurseries in north Georgia, and only leave their greenhouses the day before they are delivered to customers. The selection includes native plants, old favorites, new discoveries, and fruit suited to our climate. In addition to blueberries and thornless blackberries, there are also raspberries and a tried-and-true fig variety available. This year's plant varieties include many that attract pollinators such as a native hybrid azalea, coneflowers, a phlox for sun and one for shade. You will also find many deer resistant/tolerant varieties. There are two new ferns on the list, and the hard to find Pink Muhly Grass. "Proven Winner" plants this year include the Buddleia Pugster® 'Amethyst' dwarf Butterfly Bush and Hydrangea paniculata 'Fire Light®' (sometimes called Red Limelight). And this year two beautiful camellias are offered, one that is fall blooming and another that blooms in winter/early spring.

In addition, literally hundreds of additional blooming plants will be available for purchase on the pickup day (which are not on the order form). Think of all the best blooming plants in mid-April - azaleas galore, and loads of other spring favorites just in time for Easter! And this year they are trying something new, and will be selling "chances" for one lucky customer to receive an unusual and gorgeous 5-foot tall Japanese maple! Full details are in the order form and plant descriptions documents.

The plant sale order forms are also available at the Extension Office, located at 26 Johnson Street, Suite A in Dahlonega. The deadline for orders is Friday, March 15, 2019, with the ONE DAY ONLY plant pick-up date on Saturday, April 13, from 9:00am to 3:00pm at the Lumpkin County Roads/Recycling Department, 1646 Red Oak Flats Road in Dahlonega. Master Gardeners will be in attendance at the pickup site to help with any questions you may have about soil preparation and basic care for the plants you have ordered.

Also available is the "Gardener's Journal", created by the Georgia Mountains Master Gardeners to be used as a handy and fun way to keep a record of your garden plants and maintenance projects. It is not year dated so it can be used in successive years to improve your garden record keeping. The cost for these beautifully illustrated journals is $15.00 or two for $25.00, and they make great gifts.

Proceeds from last year's sales were used by the 4-H to enhance the programs for their members and to pay for scholarships to attend camps and enrichment activities. The Master Gardeners continue to establish and maintain gardening projects throughout the Lumpkin and Dawson County areas, help fund the Junior Master Gardener's projects with their after school club program "Diggin'-It", provide college scholarships, and they continue to host educational gardening presentations throughout the year.
