GMMG / 4-H Plant Sale 2018

After experiencing many days of frigid temperatures, snow, and ice this winter, it's time to get excited for spring and preparing our gardens. The Lumpkin County 4-H and the Georgia Mountains Master Gardeners stand ready to provide beautiful, quality plants once again offered through their annual plant sale. They are now taking orders for many selections of perennials, shrubs, fruit, ground covers and fern varieties. This is your opportunity to fulfill your gardening goals by ordering superior plants, among them many unusual items.

Thirty-six different plants are available for purchase until Friday, February 23, 2018 with delivery in mid-March. This year's varieties include many that attract pollinators such as a native hybrid azalea, coneflowers, GREEN-eyed susan and butterfly weed. You will also find many deer resistant/tolerant varieties. "Proven Winner" plants this year include the Buddleia Lo & Behold 'Ice Chip' dwarf Butterfly Bush. Two varieties of blueberries are being offered and are special in that they were developed by UGA and are not available potted in box stores. For those potted plant lovers, you will once again find the dwarf pomegranate and new this year, the Meyer lemon.

You can see more details on the order form through the link below. Color photographs and plant descriptions of each of the 35 plants offered can also be found through a link.

The plant sale order forms are also available at the Extension Office, located at 26 Johnson Street, Suite A in Dahlonega. The deadline for orders is Friday, February 23, 2018, with the plant pick-up dates on Friday, March 16, 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 17, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the Lumpkin County Roads/Recycling Department, 1646 Red Oak Flats Road in Dahlonega. Master Gardeners will be in attendance at the pickup site to help with any questions you may have about soil preparation and basic care for the plants you have ordered.

Also available is the "Gardener's Journal", created by the Georgia Mountains Master Gardeners to be used as a handy and fun way to keep a record of your garden plants and maintenance projects. It is not year dated so it can be used in successive years to improve your garden record keeping. The cost for these beautifully illustrated journals is $15.00 or two for $25.00.

Proceeds from last year's sales were used by the 4-H to enhance the programs for their members and to pay for scholarships to attend camps and enrichment activities. The Master Gardeners continue to establish and maintain gardening projects throughout the Lumpkin and Dawson County areas, help fund the Junior Master Gardener's projects with their after school club program "Diggin-It", provide scholarships, and they continue to host notable gardening presentations throughout the year. Please call the Lumpkin County Extension office at 706-864-2275 or check their website www.extension.uga.edu/county-offices/lumpkin.html for further information.
